The .44-77 was a great cartridge for the American West of the 1870s. This was a rifle that was capable to take a large animal such as an elk, moose, or bison with a single shot, could be used on bears if necessary, and could reach out with authority on a man. The Sharps Rifle Company chambered it in the Model 1869 and then carried it over into the famous Model 1874. It was the best-selling Sharps chambering for sporting rifles until the company added the government’s new .45 (.45-70), circa 1875. The Remington Rolling Block had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive, just what many governments wanted in the latter half of the 19th Century. They were popular with civilians as well. Rolling block rifles were produced in various action sizes for calibers from .50 centerfire all the way down to .22 rimfire and survived well into the 20th Century. Compared to more sophisticated single shot actions like the Browning/Winchester Model 1885, the Remington Rolling Block was relatively economical to produce, and this contributed to its longevity. The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is somewhat reflective with good rifling. The stock is solid, showing honest use. A very nice example of the Remington rolling block in a great Western cartridge! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 28 inches.
