Description:
Offered for sale is a J.P. Clabrough 12 gauge side-by-side shotgun, manufactured in 1879, featuring 30-inch damascus barrels. This is a genuine 19th-century English shotgun, representing the Birmingham trade era of fine sporting arms.
Maker History
J.P. Clabrough & Son was a well-known Birmingham, England gunmaker and firearms retailer active throughout the mid-to-late 1800s. While Clabrough did not operate as a London “best gun” maker, the firm was respected for producing solid, well-made sporting shotguns using Birmingham trade craftsmen. Many Clabrough guns were built for export, particularly to the American market, and were known for practical field use rather than ornament alone.
Shotguns from this period were hand-fitted, built with damascus twist steel barrels, and regulated for black powder loads, which was standard at the time of manufacture.
Condition & Notes
This shotgun is well used and shows clear signs of age and long service. The damascus barrels are in the white / raw, with no recent refinishing performed by us. Overall condition reflects an honest, unrestored antique rather than a restored or modernized example.
Due to age and configuration:
  • The shotgun has not been test fired
  • Chamber length and barrel condition have not been evaluated
  • It should be assumed suitable for display, collection, or further evaluation only
This firearm is best suited for:
  • collector of antique English sporting arms
  • project or restoration candidate
  • display or wall-hanger example of 19th-century gunmaking
Important Notice
As with all antique damascus-barreled shotguns, professional inspection by a qualified double-gun specialist is strongly recommended prior to any attempt at firing. No representations are made regarding shootability.
Please review all photographs carefully and ask any questions prior to .
