Description: This is an original Civil War rifle, made in 1864 at the Confederate Fayetteville North Carolina Armory. Gun retains a pleasing patina overall with a nice dark uncleaned look to the brass. Lock markings are clear. The barrel date is no longer visible due to use and some pitting, although the VP Eaglehead proofs are still visible. Iron parts have light pitting overall, although the barrel is still bright under the bands and under the wood line when taken out of the stock. Lock works well. 33 inch barrel. Stock has some dings and handling marks, there are 2 sets of initials carved into the right side of the butt, faint outline of the PB cartouche on the left side of the stock opposite the lock. Old wood repair on either side of the barrel tang that was done a very long time ago and shows wear consistant with the rest of the gun, possibly done during the period of use. The rear sight is interesting, possibly replaced but definitely looks good and matches the overall appearance of the rest of the gun. The ramrod is a more modern replacement. The .58 caliber bore is dirty and pitted, we do not see any traces of rifling left in it, and our simple triangle muzzle gauge puts it at .61 caliber. If you've been looking for an honest and used Fayetteville rifle for your collection, this would certainly fit the bill. ANTIQUE!
