Description:
Early 1800s Antique BRASS BARREL British FLINTLOCK Pistol TOWER STYLE PROOFS

LIGHTLY ENGRAVED Handgun with BRASS FURNITURE

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique British Flintlock Coat/Pocket Pistol, made circa the early-18th Century in London, England. This pistol has a medium frame and a heavy brass barrel with a “Warranted” marked lock. Then as now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. According to some estimates, European rifles were made at a ratio of 250:1 over pistols, making these rare and highly coveted.

This example has a large .62 caliber bore, which would be a great deterrent to a “ne’er do well” looking at the barrel pointing at his chest. The medium size flintlocks, such as this one, is what would be carried in the busy streets of Paris or London in the pocket or coat of a stately gentleman during the tumultuous times of the early-1800’s in England and Western Europe.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The frizzen spring is a replacement. Good bore for its age. A repair has been made to the rear trigger guard tang. The wood is solid, and there is a thin crack on the left forend just under the rear of the sideplate. Markings are legible. “LONDON” marked barrel with Tower style proof marks. “WARRANTED” marked lock. This example would fit into and display well in any early 19th century collection!
