Description:
Swedish WWII Era HUSQVARNA M40 9mm Danish Police C&R PISTOL Semi-Automatic

Swedish Military & Danish Police Pistol w/ Holster, Spare Magazines, and Oliers

Here we present a C&R Swedish Husqvarna Model 40 Semi-Automatic Pistol manufactured at the Husqvarna Vapenfabriks Aktiebolag between 1946-47. When the fog of war gathered over Europe in 1939, Sweden found itself in a precarious position. Their order for Walther P38 pistols had been redirected to Germany's own military needs, and their Finnish allies couldn't spare any of their Lahti L-35 pistols. What's a neutral nation to do? Well, there was only one option, license the Finnish design and build their own.

The Husqvarna M40 emerged from necessity, a Swedish adaptation of Aimo Lahti's robust L-35 design. Chambered in the reliable 9mm Parabellum, this straight-blowback operated pistol served Sweden well through some of Europe's darkest days. From 1940 to 1946, Husqvarna Vapenfabriks AB cranked out approximately 80,000 of these solid service pistols.
It’s mostly accepted that pistols with a “D” prefix were purchased by the Danish Police post-war and about 10,000 were received between 1946-1947. Interestingly, the M40s were used by the Danforce (Danish Brigade), a group of Danish refugees organized by the British SOE between 1943-45 to help liberate Denmark from the inside. It was quite the sneaky plan as the Danish were considered to be neutral. Their primary goal was to prevent a communist takeover post German withdrawal. When Germany surrendered on May 4-5, 1945, Danforce was officially deployed and worked in coordination with the underground Danish Resistance Army. This involved disarming the remaining German forces in Denmark, arresting thousands of Danish collaborators, and took responsibility for law and order until the Danish police could resume their duties. While British forces officially accepted the German surrender, it was Danforce and the Danish Resistance that handled the immediate aftermath on Danish soil.

Officer Einar Roth had these pistols stamped with a “crown/HV” inspection mark when he received the pistols from Husqvarna directly.

Despite Sweden's official neutrality, these pistols saw extensive military use and were also supplied to Danish police forces. It would have been issued with a black or brown pigskin holster with two magazine slots, cleaning rod and combination tool.

The overall condition is nearing fine. Original finish. The action is strong. Bright rifled bore. Both grips are fine. Markings are sharp. The faceplate on the front of the frame is missing a piece from the left side. The backstrap is cut out for a shoulder stock. The holster is in fine shape with minimal handling wear. Includes two magazines, two oilers, a cleaning rod, and combination tool.
