The Smith & Wesson Model 46 is a vintage, single-action semi-automatic target pistol chambered in .22 Long Rifle (.22 LR), produced between 1957 and 1966. It was originally designed as a budget-friendly counterpart to Smith & Wesson's premium flagship target pistol, the celebrated Model 41. [1, 2, 3]
Because it was manufactured in much smaller numbers and discontinued relatively quickly, the Model 46 is highly sought after by collectors. [1, 2]
Overview & History
In the late 1950s, Smith & Wesson sought to offer a scaled-back version of their premier target pistol to appeal to cost-conscious target shooters and military training programs, famously developing variations for the U.S. Air Force in 1959. While it shared the exact same internal architecture, excellent accuracy, and crisp trigger feel as the Model 41, the Model 46 achieved its lower price point through simplified aesthetics and manufacturing shortcuts. Differences From the Model 41
To cut down production costs, Smith & Wesson omitted several premium features found on the Model 41: [1]
- Grips: The Model 46 traditionally shipped with molded checkered plastic grips featuring integrated thumb rests, rather than the high-grade checkered walnut grips found on the Model 41.
- Finish: It lacked the high-polish, mirror-like "S&W Bright Blue" finish, opting instead for a standard, more utilitarian satin blue finish.
- Machining: The frame omitted the cocking indicator found on the back of early Model 41 slides, and featured less complex exterior machining lines. [1, 2]
