Description:
Fine WWI Period S&W Model 1917 .45 Military Revolver
Offered here and just acquired is this original WWI period issue Smith & Wesson Army Model .45 revolver. Serial number 29854 it has a 5.5" barrel.
This revolver, the Smith & Wesson U.S. Army Model 1917, was officially known by Smith & Wesson as the “.45 Hand Ejector Model of 1917.” It was developed during World War I to supplement shortages of the Colt M1911. Smith & Wesson adapted its large N-frame revolver to fire the rimless .45 ACP cartridge using Joseph Wesson’s newly invented half-moon clips.
Serial number 29854 places the revolver in very early wartime production, and manufactured in late 1917 or very early 1918. Collectors generally place revolvers below approximately serial 42,000 into the first production block inspected by Major Gilbert H. Stewart (“GHS” inspector mark).
This revolver’s original features are correct for an early Army contract gun:
  • 5.5" barrel
  • Blued finish
  • Smooth walnut grips with lanyard ring
  • Chambered in .45 ACP
  • Issued with half-moon clips
  • “U.S. ARMY MODEL 1917” butt marking
  • “UNITED STATES PROPERTY” under barrel
  • Fixed service sights
The Model 1917 is historically significant because it was one of the first revolvers designed around moon clips, and it served through WWI. It retains about 80-85% original finish and has an excellent bore. Shows wear consistent with service but is in solid shape. We have shown close up images of the revolver under our harsh 2000 watt lamps which whow that the barrel has a mixture of brown/blue patina. BUT THE IMAGES DO NOT DO JUSTICE TO THE SPECIMEN as the remainder of the barrel and frame remain a BRIGHT AND DEEP BLUE. It is genuinely uncommon today to find better than fair or good specimens because many saw heavy service, arsenal refinishing, police use, or postwar modification.
