Description: This is an original 1863 dated "low hump" musket made at the Richmond Arsenal in Viginia for the Confederate Government during the Civil War. Lock retains a pleasing patina, markings are good. Lock is in good working order. The 40 inch barrel has been cleaned, no visible barrel date, however the VP Eagle head proofs are visible and it has the proper T slot for the rear sight. Barrel is missing the bolster clean out screw and rear sight. The stock has been shortened a bit ahead of the middle band, front band is missing. Both bands feature the offset U marking found on Richmond produced guns. Proper brass buttplate has a pleasing dark patina. The lock cavity of the stock features the proper Mules Foot as is common on Richmond produced stocks. Stock has some dings and handling marks as well as MBL neatly carved into the flat opposite the lock. THere are some age cracks in the stock that fairly solid, the worst of which extends for about 9 inches on the left side of the butt from the buttplate. Bore is dusty with no visible rifling. The forward lock screw appears to be too short and does not engage the lock plate. There is a carck in the top of the rear tang, however it not broken through. A solid original Confederate musket that almost certainly saw use and would be an easy restoration or great for impossible to find original parts. ANTIQUE!
