Description:
Serial #39772, .50-70 Gov’t., 32 1/2" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome rifle that has an 1863-dated Springfield lockplate, and matching numbers on the receiver and barrel. The metal has an overall mottled gray patina with even areas of plum-brown freckling along the barrel, and a darker mottled patina on the receiver, 1870-dated breechblock, and lock. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered throughout the very nice reapplied military oil finish, with fairly crisp "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin) and "GWS" (George W. Sherman) inspector cartouches on the left side opposite the lock. The correct flat-head ramrod and stock furniture matches the rest of the metal, although the "US" marked buttplate has light-moderate pitting along the surface. This is a very nice .50 caliber Trapdoor, and is in very good-near fine condition overall. Antique;
