Description:
Late-1700s WILLIAMS of London Antique British FLINTLOCK Self Defense Pistol

Late 18th Century Handgun with BRASS FURNITURE

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Williams British Flintlock Holster/Horse Pistol, made circa the late-18th Century in London, England. This pistol has a large frame and a heavy barrel. Then as now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. According to some estimates, European rifles were made at a ratio of 250:1 over pistols, making these rare and highly coveted.

This example has a large .52 caliber bore, which would be a great deterrent to a “ne’er do well” looking at the barrel pointing at his chest. The larger flintlocks, such as this one, are what would be carried in the busy streets of Paris or London in a deep coat pocket or holster of a stately gentleman during the tumultuous times of the late-1700’s in England and Western Europe.

As mentioned, this example was manufactured c. late 1700s and has “LONDON” marked on the top of the barrel. It has what appear to be London proof marks on the upper left barrel flat, and “WILLIAMS” signed on the lock.

The overall condition is very good. Original gray and brown patinas. Nicely aged brass. The action is strong. This example remains in its original flintlock configuration. Good bore for its age. Markings are legible. The wood is in very good shape showing only two thin cracks, one on each side of the forend at the muzzle. A chip has been repaired above the nose of the lock.

This example would fit into and display well in any 18th century collection!
