Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique U.S. Sharps New Model 1863 Rifle, made circa 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. The most famous, single-shot percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber breech-loading firearm invented and patented by Hartford native Christian Sharps. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War; but only 6,140 New Model 1863 Rifles were produced. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier.
This example has “M.N.M” Ordnance inspection initials for Moses N. Marshall marked on the left breech of the barrel along with multiple single letter inspection marks. It was made to accept a socket bayonet.
The overall condition is very good. Some original blue is present and shares space with a dark brown patina. The action is strong. The primer feed mechanism is absent. The bore is reflective and has sharp rifling. This example sports a solid stock. Here is a nice example of a rare Sharps rifle!
