Durs Egg was born the son of Leonz Egg in 1748, who was a gunmaker in Oberbuchsiten, Switzerland. Egg was apprenticed in Solothurn and Paris before establishing his own business in London in 1772 where he worked as a gunmaker and sword cutler. He was a contemporary of Joseph Manton, Jean Samuel Pauly, and the uncle of Joseph Egg. He was Contractor to Ordnance between 1784 and 1820, and was granted multiple patents during that time, including a breech loading gun. He was also Gunmaker to George IV & Duke of York during this time. A silver-mounted flintlock breechloading rifle by Durs Egg, made around 1784, is preserved in the Royal Collection, Windsor. He became blind in 1822 and died in 1831. Durs Egg is known as one of the finest gunmakers in London at the time. “--- D. EGG LONDON ---” is gold inlaid on top of the barrel with a gold band at the breech, with partly legible “D. Egg” signed on both the lock and on the frizzen. The overall condition is fine. Original brown patina remains over the damascus barrel. Strong action. Most of the bore retains its shimmer, but dims towards the muzzle. Solid, very good stock. Some of the wrist checkering shows light handling wear. A sliver is absent on the left side of the forend. Markings are legible. Gold inlaid barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33-1/4 inches. Caliber: 16 Gauge Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
