The SIG Sauer P228 is one of the classic double-action service pistols of the late Cold War and post-Cold War era, respected for its balance, reliability, and exceptionally smooth shooting characteristics. Manufactured in Germany and later assembled/imported through SIG Sauer’s U.S. operations, the P228 became widely known through military and law enforcement use, most famously as the foundation for the U.S. military’s M11 sidearm. Chambered in 9mm, the P228 developed a reputation for combining duty-grade durability with ergonomics that still hold up remarkably well today. There’s a reason so many longtime SIG enthusiasts still speak highly of the older folded-slide pistols—they simply have a feel to them that newer guns struggle to replicate.
This example features the classic “lollipop" iron sight setup that many older SIG pistols became known for, adding to the unmistakably vintage character of the handgun. The P228 operates on a traditional double-action/single-action system with SIG’s well-known decocker mounted on the frame, allowing the pistol to be safely lowered without manipulating the trigger. Its alloy frame helps keep the pistol lighter than a full steel gun while still offering excellent recoil control and natural balance in the hand. The compact dimensions make it comfortable to carry while still providing a full fighting grip and impressive shootability.
