Description:
A nicely made reproduction and very similar to the US 1841 style mortar that was designed by Dutch military engineer Menno Van Coehorn early in the 18th century. It has iron handle bars so that two men could move it along in the trenches that are made of 3 inch heavy thick planks that are 24 Inches by 13 -1/2 inches. The timbers are army green. The barrel is a Japan black and shows a fair amount of use but is still in pretty good condition. The bore measures approximately 2 3/4 inches which is designed for a 3 lb projectile. A standard lead or iron ball, or a 3 lb capacity shell casing. Bore is approximately 11 inches deep. These are often categorized as an approximate 2/3 or 3/4 scale model of Civil War-era Coehorn Mortar.  Replicas of historical pieces in this size class are popular among competitive artillery shooters and recreational black powder enthusiasts. The mortar was one of the most effective pieces of artillery capable of “lobbing” explosive mortar projectiles in high-arching ballistic trajectories at enemy positions. You could certainly surprise your neighbors with it.
