Collectors will appreciate this exceptional Merwin Hulbert 3rd Model Pocket Army revolver, an iconic, large frame design that stands out for its rarity and historical significance. Featuring the desirable top strap, round barrel, fluted cylinder, and distinctive bird’s head butt with pointed extension and original lanyard hole, this revolver is a true showcase of late 19th-century American firearms craftsmanship. The factory nickel-plated finish remains intact, complemented by beautifully casehardened accents on the hammer, trigger guard, barrel latch, and a striking blue trigger. The left side of the barrel displays the classic two-line Hopkins & Allen address with patent dates, while frame markings clearly read “CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1873” on the left and “MERWIN HULBERT & Co. N.Y./POCKET ARMY” on the right, adding provenance and collector appeal. Key matching numbers are present: the serial number is conveniently stamped on the right side of the lanyard extension, with assembly number “4230” found both on the back of the barrel lug and the rear face of the cylinder, ensuring authenticity. Outfitted with original black, two-piece checkered hard rubber grips, this revolver not only exemplifies outstanding period condition but also represents a valuable investment for any discerning collector seeking a rare and historically important addition to their collection.
Condition
Excellent plus retaining 98% plus original nickel on the barrel showing some isolated light spotting as well as some scattered minor surface scratches. The frame and cylinder retain 99% original nickel finish showing only collector type handling marks and surface scratches. The hammer and trigger guard show 90% brilliant original deep case colors, and the trigger still retains most of its handsome original niter blue finish. The grips are also excellent plus. Mechanically excellent. A truly outstanding Merwin Hulbert Revolver.
