This rare and beautifully preserved Winchester Model 1892 rifle, chambered in .38 caliber, is a standout collectible dating to the early 20th century. According to the included factory letter, its serial number was assigned on November 9, 1901, and it was received at the warehouse later that year before shipping in July 1902 as part of order 146586. This rifle features an octagon barrel with the classic Winchester two-line address and “38 W.C.F.” caliber marking on the top flat, complemented by the standard three-line model and patent markings on the upper tang and serial number on the bottom of the receiver, all attesting to its authenticity. Designed for precision and practicality, it is equipped with a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and an elevation-adjustable buckhorn rear sight. The smooth forearm and straight-grip stock, finished with a classic crescent buttplate, enhance its timeless appeal. This Model 1892 combines exceptional condition and historical significance, making it an enticing acquisition for collectors seeking a genuine Winchester lever-action with strong provenance and classic features.
Condition
Excellent, retains 90% plus bright original high polish blue finish, 75% of the vivid original case colors, and 80% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance a smooth grey patina and some mild freckling visible along the upper right edge of the receiver. The wood is also excellent with some minor storage dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The Winchester Model 1892 paired well with a Colt Single Action Army in the same caliber and was popular with lawmen in the late 19th century and early 20th century and was frequently used in westerns. They are increasingly hard to acquire in excellent condition.
