Description: Here is a beautifully preserved and historically significant Volcanic Repeating Arms carbine from around 1856. This rare, all-original firearm would be a stunning centerpiece for any serious collector. It bears the serial number 2986 on the lower tang, indicating it was made during the final months of common Volcanic production between late 1855 and early 1856, making it highly desirable among collectors. Chambered for the unique .41 Volcanic cartridge with its built-in magazine, this rifle features a deep blue barrel and magazine tube, complemented by original brass receiver and side plates that have developed a lovely patina over time. The hammer and lever showcase beautifully preserved color casehardening, highlighting its excellent condition. It’s fitted with a high-quality walnut stock finished with hand-rubbed varnish, offering both a comfortable grip and attractive appearance. The iron sights include a brass blade front and an adjustable nitre-blued rear sight mounted on top of the receiver. The four-line rolled stamp on the barrel flat “THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEWHAVEN CONN / PATENT FEB. 14. 1854”—confirms its authenticity. As a key milestone in American firearms history, the Volcanic lever-action design with an integrated magazine and self-contained cartridges laid the groundwork for future innovations by Oliver Winchester, leading to the famous Henry and Winchester rifles. This carbine isn’t just a rare survivor from the early days of repeating firearms; it’s also a foundational piece that connects to the birth of Winchester’s legendary legacy—an extraordinary addition for any serious collector. Condition Excellent with 90% plus of the original blue finish still remaining on the barrel with the balance a slightly thinning gray/brown patina. The receiver, side plates and buttplate all retain their original mustard yellow patina having aged correctly with the side plates still having never been removed. The hammer and lever retain 60% of its case colors. The breech bolt, cartridge elevator and rear sight retain 85% of their nitre blued finish. The walnut stock is also excellent and retains 95% plus of the original varnish finish overall showing some minor handling marks on both sides, with a heavier pressure dent on the left side of the stock. The screw heads in the action as well as the wood screws holding the buttstock and buttplate in place all retain 95% of their factory nitre blued finish with all the screw heads in excellent condition. This is an extremely high condition, late production Volcanic carbine.
