Description: This beautiful Winchester Model 1866 rifle, made in 1873, is a wonderful piece of American firearms history and a treasured find for any serious collector. It features a stunning blued full octagon barrel and a full-length magazine with a convenient loading gate, showcasing Winchester’s renowned craftsmanship. The brass forearm cap, frame, and signature crescent buttplate create a lovely contrast with the vivid casehardened hammer and lever. The straight-grain black walnut stock and forearm, finished in a warm varnish, add a touch of timeless elegance and durability. Designed with practicality in mind, it includes factory-installed sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock for easy carrying. The barrel is equipped with a dovetail-mounted sporting-style front sight with a nickel-silver blade, paired with the distinctive second-style folding leaf rear sight secured by an external retaining spring. To enhance its authenticity and functionality, the hinged trapdoor buttplate conceals the original four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod with a brass tip—an exceptional and highly sought-after feature. The top barrel flat proudly displays Winchester’s classic two-line patent legend, emphasizing its heritage, with the serial number neatly marked behind the trigger. This Model 1866 isn’t just remarkable for its excellent original condition and fine details; it’s also a valuable collector’s treasure that reflects the innovative spirit and rich history of one of America’s most iconic rifles. Condition Exceptionally fine. The blue finish on the barrel and magazine has faded to a plum brown patina. The barrel has some light edge wear and some scattered patches of surface discoloration. The loading gate retains most of the niter blue finish. The hammer and lever have a silver-gray patina with traces of the original casehardened finish. The exceptionally fine forearm cap, frame, and crescent buttplate have a very attractive, deep, un-touched dark, attractive patina. The side plate joints are tight. The barrel markings and serial number are sharp. The stock and forearm are both fine with moderate handling wear and most of the original varnish. Handling wear is limited to a few very minor dents and scratches. The loading gate is jammed, but the action functions. This is an exceptionally fine, original example of a Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle.
