James Brown & Son manufactured firearms circa 1848-1887. Both barrels signed “JAMES BROWN & SON/PITTSBURGH PA”, the maker of at least the barrels, and the top barrel signed “W K STRONG”, who was a gunmaker and dealer out of Big Rapids and Bay City, Michigan in the 1870s. William Strong was known to use some of Brown’s components in his builds. This over/under percussion gun is a design that Pennsylvania gun makers seemed to favor during this period marked by westward expansion, hunting, trapping, and frontier living. This rifled barrel over a smoothbore would have given the user two shots instead of one in a day when most people had to make one count. This would have come in handy when hunting various types of game as well as defending oneself against dangerous game or two-legged predators. The smooth bore would have offered versatility in that either shot, a single ball or conical, or a combination of “buck ‘n’ ball” could be used depending on the circumstances. The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Original finish and patina. Both bores are in great shape for their ages and the rifling is sharp in the rifle bore. The stock is solid with light handling wear and a repaired crack between the top of the left lock and the barrel tang. Engraved locks. Markings are legible. This specimen is a scarce and great example of a superposed American double barrel combination gun from this period. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 30 inches. Caliber: .38 on the Rifled Barrel (land to land) and 16 Gauge on the Smoothbore. Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
