Lot consist of: (A) Rare Pattern 1861 Dahlgren bowie bayonet, often referred to as the Plymouth Naval Rifle Bowie Knife Bayonet. Designed in 1856 by US Navy Admiral John A. B. Dahlgren for use aboard his ship, the USS Plymouth, this pattern of knife bayonet replaced the saber-style bayonet. These bayonets were produced for the US Navy by Ames Mfg. Co. of Chicopee, Massachusetts, in September 1861. This example is marked “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE, MASS.” on the obverse ricasso and dated "1861" on the reverse ricasso. The bayonet features an unfullered bowie style, spear point blade that remains bright with scattered areas of cleaned oxidation. The hilt is of heavy brass with one-piece pommel, guard, and back strap that exhibit a pleasing patina with scattered light dings. One-piece walnut finger grooved grip. The bayonet is complete with its leather scabbard that exhibits various scuffs but remains firm. Brass mounts with a pleasing patina. Drag is missing one pin but both remain mounts firm. CONDITION: Very Good. (B) Model 1870 rolling block navy rifle bayonet marked "U.S.N. / G.G.S. / 1870". The blade exhibits a gray patina. Cast brass grip with simulated fish scale decoration and a bird head pommel that has crossed Dahlgren guns over a kedge anchor. Hilt with mellow patina. Complete with leather scabbard that exhibits creases and scuffs. Mounts exhibit a few light dents with mellow patina. CONDITION: Very Good. PROVENANCE: Ex. Castlerock Museum.
