This particular rifle has seen very little use. J. P. Gemmer had purchased the original Hawken Shop in St Louis, Missouri in 1864. He converted many cartridge rifles into a Hawken style rifles with features found on the famous Hawken Plains rifles. Some of those he converted were Springfield Trapdoor, Spencer, and of course Sharps rifles. These Shiloh Sharps Gemmer were once a catalogue item offered when the company was in NY and later for a short time when they moved to Big Timer, Montana. Its hard to believe a configuration like this could be produced in a factory and still have a profit. Considering the amount of work it would take to produce a rifle like this. Anyone who has built a traditional Hawken rifle from parts will understand immediately what it takes to have results like what is represented here. This particular rifle was made in 1998 and represents one of the last Gemmer manufactured by Shiloh confirmed by Shiloh Sharps. These Gemmers are built like Hawken rifles with the double wedge fore end, cleaning rod, and crescent butt plate with a fancy cheek piece. These factory produced Shiloh Sharps Gemmers do not come up often and are valued collector pieces. When they do come up they command high prices. This is a rare opportunity to own such a beautiful example of American craftsmanship. The fancy grain and dark finish of the walnut coupled with the color case receiver, lever, and butt plate make quiet a special package in this rifle.
