Manufactured by Fabrique Nationale in Herstal, Belgium and built specifically for the Luxembourg Army, this rare .30-06 Luxembourg contract FN49 is one of only approximately 6,203 rifles produced. Even among FN49 variants, Luxembourg rifles occupy elite collector territory due to their extremely limited production, exceptional FN machining quality, and strong association with early NATO Cold War military contracts.
Designed by legendary FN engineer Dieudonné Saive, the FN49 represented one of the most refined battle rifle systems of the postwar era and directly influenced development of the iconic FN FAL. The rifle utilizes a robust gas-operated tilting bolt action that remains smooth, reliable, and remarkably soft-shooting for a full-power .30-06 military rifle. This example retains its original military configuration with adjustable tangent rear sight, protected front sight assembly, 10-round magazine, and beautifully machined receiver rails showcasing the extraordinary craftsmanship FN was known for during its early postwar production years.
Collector details on this rifle are outstanding. The rifle remains non-import marked, a major advantage for advanced FN collectors as many surviving FN49s were later import stamped or arsenal reworked. Matching serialized components are present, and the rifle retains sharp FN Herstal receiver legends, Belgian inspection proofs, ordnance bomb marking, and a desirable Luxembourg contract stock cartouche. The original high-polish blued finish and strong stock condition further reinforce the rifle’s authenticity and collector appeal.
Historically, the Luxembourg FN49 occupies a fascinating position in early Cold War NATO history. Luxembourg adopted the FN49 during the rapid postwar modernization period as Western Europe rebuilt its military infrastructure against rising Soviet influence. FN49 rifles from Luxembourg contracts are now considered among the rarest standard military FN49 variants encountered on the U.S. collector market, particularly in original matching non-import condition such as this example.
Finding a Luxembourg contract FN49 is difficult. Finding one with matching numbers, strong original finish, intact markings, and no import marks is another level entirely. This is a serious upper-tier FN49 collector rifle with rarity, condition, historical significance, and long-term investment appeal all working in its favor.
