The Gewehr 1871/84 (officially designated as the Infanterie-Gewehr Mod. 71/84) was the first repeating bolt-action rifle adopted by the military of the German Empire. Designed by Paul Mauser, it upgraded the single-shot Mauser Model 1871 by adding an 8-round under-barrel tubular magazine.
Caliber: 11×60mm Rimmed Mauser (a massive black powder cartridge).Capacity: 8 rounds in the tubular magazine, 1 on the lifter, and 1 in the chamber (maximum 10 rounds).Action: Bolt-action with an elevator-style cartridge lifter.Magazine Cut-off: Features a mechanical switch that allows the soldier to bypass the magazine, using the rifle as a single-loader while keeping the 8 rounds in reserve.
The Tubular Magazine: Based heavily on the Kropatschek and Winchester systems. While it vastly increased firepower, reloading individual rounds into the tube was slow, and the rifle became noticeably front-heavy when fully loaded.No Cleaning Rod: Because the magazine occupied the space underneath the barrel, the traditional cleaning rod was replaced with a stacking rod (used to hook rifles together in a pyramid). This forced Germany to adopt the world‚s first pull-through cleaning kit, a concept still used today.Manufacturing Quality: Built across major imperial arsenals like Spandau, Danzig, Erfurt, and Amberg. Firearms historians widely consider the 71/84 to represent the absolute peak of fit, finish, and manufacturing refinement for standard-issue military rifles.
