This classic Weimar-era German Cape Gun from J.P. Sauer & Sohn represents one of the most practical and elegant hunting firearms produced in the Suhl gunmaking tradition. Designed for European mixed-game hunting, the cape gun allowed the sportsman to carry both a shotgun and rifle in a single firearm. With a 16-gauge smoothbore barrel paired alongside an 8x57JR rifle barrel, this combination was ideal for hunting everything from upland birds and hare to roe deer and wild boar in dense woodland.
Mechanically, this Sauer cape gun utilizes a traditional side-by-side combination barrel layout mounted to a robust break-action boxlock receiver. The firearm features a double trigger configuration allowing the shooter to select between the rifle and shotgun barrels. A tang-mounted selector system typical of Suhl-built combination guns allows engagement of the rifle firing mechanism, providing seamless transition between small game and larger quarry during the hunt.
The rifle barrel is chambered in the classic 8x57JR cartridge, one of the most common sporting calibers used in pre-WWII German hunting arms.
