The N. Lajot & Cie “Special Model for Pigeons” is an extraordinary example of Belgian best-gun craftsmanship and represents the type of elite live pigeon gun that established Liège as one of the world's great centers of fine gunmaking. Combining a hand-detachable sidelock action, master engraving, and exceptional mechanical quality, this shotgun stands comfortably alongside the finest offerings from Lebeau-Courally, Francotte, and the best English makers of the period.
Produced in 1927, this 12 bore was purpose-built for the demanding sport of live pigeon shooting, where absolute reliability, strong lockup, and precise handling were essential. Chambered in 12 gauge with 2.75" chambers, the gun carries 28.5" barrels choked Light Modified (.016") and Improved Modified (.033"), ideal constrictions for live bird competition and longer-range sporting applications. Weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces, it balances beautifully while providing enough weight for a smooth, controlled swing on fast-moving targets. The concave matted rib with gold front bead offers a classic sighting plane consistent with high-grade competition guns of the era.
The shotgun is built on a true hand-detachable Holland & Holland-style 9-pin sidelock action featuring double triggers with articulated front trigger, ejectors, non-automatic safety, bushed strikers, and a Purdey hidden treble fastener. Combined with double underlugs, the action is exceptionally strong and was specifically designed to withstand the heavy use associated with competitive pigeon shooting. The detachable locks allow for convenient maintenance and are a hallmark of best-quality gunmaking.
This example remains in excellent overall condition, displaying only very faint wear considering its age. The bores are clear, the action is smooth and locks up tight, the triggers are crisp, and the ejectors remain strong and properly timed. Mechanically, the gun remains extremely impressive.
The defining feature of this shotgun is its breathtaking engraving. The receiver is covered in full-coverage floral and ribbon scroll engraving by master engraver H. Corombelle, one of Belgium's most respected engraving artists. The work extends throughout the action and onto the fully engraved trigger guard. Corombelle's signature appears adjacent to the trigger guard, confirming the gun's pedigree and elevating its desirability among collectors of fine sporting arms.
The blued steel barrels are marked “Fabrication Speciale Pour Tir Aux Pigeons” and “N. Lajot & Cie - Liège”, proudly identifying the gun's intended purpose as a dedicated pigeon gun and its prestigious Belgian maker.
The stockwork is equally impressive. The shotgun is fitted with a stunning straight-grip walnut stock and matching splinter forend, both featuring sharp flat-top diamond-point checkering. A gold initial oval engraved “PB” is inlet into the belly of the stock, while the forend carries an elegant gold crown-over-shield inlay, adding another level of refinement rarely encountered even on high-grade doubles.
