This Walther P.38 AC40 represents early full-scale military production of Germany’s primary service pistol during the opening phase of World War II. Produced in 1940, AC-coded pistols were manufactured at Walther’s Zella-Mehlis facility as the P.38 rapidly replaced the P.08 Luger. B-block examples are especially sought after due to their early-war configuration and relatively limited output.
The P.38 introduced a double-action trigger and locked-breech short-recoil system that revolutionized military sidearm doctrine. Soldiers benefited from safer carry, faster first-shot capability, and excellent reliability under combat conditions. Walther’s machining quality during 1940 production remains among the finest of the entire wartime run.
This pistol displays correct E/359 Waffenamt acceptance marks identifying Walther inspection, along with Eagle/Swastika Heer acceptance proofs. The AC stamp on the left trigger guard is correct for early AC40 production. A small inspector stamp beneath the trigger guard is consistent with Walther sub-inspection practices observed on early-war frames.
All-matching AC40 pistols are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly within the B-block serial range. With a collector rarity rating of 8 out of 10, this example stands well above standard wartime P.38 offerings. Matching status, early date, and correct proofs combine to place this pistol firmly in the upper tier of WWII P.38 collecting.
Visually refined and historically significant, this AC40 P.38 captures Walther craftsmanship at its wartime peak. Its clean lines, martial markings, and early production character give it undeniable presence. For the collector, it represents a cornerstone example of early WWII German service pistols.
