Description: RARE FN A-5 GRADE 3 ENGRAVED FACTORY SPECIAL FOR PIGEONS - GOLD INLAID MANUFACTURER - FN HERSTAL - BELGIUM MODEL - BROWNING AUTO-5 GRADE 3 - "SPECIAL POUR TIR AUX PIGEONS" ACTION - SEMI-AUTO SN - 6862302 GAUGE - 12 GAUGE 2.75" CHAMBERS BARREL LENGTH - 27.5" CHOKED - IMPORVED MODIFIED .026" CAPACITY – 4+1 DAC - 1.5" DAH - 1.875" LOP - 14.625" WEIGHT - 7 LB 15.4 OZ SIGHTS - VENT MATTED RIB WITH SILVER FRONT BEAD PRODUCED - 1968 The FN Browning Auto-5 Grade III "Special Pour Tir Aux Pigeons" is one of the most desirable and rarely encountered factory variants of the legendary Belgian Auto-5. Produced by Fabrique Nationale in Herstal, Belgium, this special-order model was purpose-built for competitive pigeon shooting and combines the proven Auto-5 action with upgraded engraving, exhibition-grade walnut, gold inlays, and specialized competition features. It represents a fascinating intersection of Browning's most successful semi-automatic shotgun and the elite world of European live pigeon shooting. Produced in 1968, this example is chambered in 12 gauge with 2.75" chambers and fitted with a 27.5" Acier Special steel barrel choked Improved Modified (.026"), an ideal constriction for live bird competition where dense, effective patterns are essential. The shotgun weighs 7 pounds 15.4 ounces, providing excellent balance and enough mass to moderate recoil during extended shooting sessions. A slightly raised ventilated matted rib fitted with a silver front bead provides a fast and highly visible sight picture. The shotgun operates through John M. Browning's famous long-recoil semi-automatic action, one of the most reliable and successful shotgun mechanisms ever designed. This example remains in very good overall condition, showing only faint wear typical of careful use. The bore is clear, the action operates smoothly, and the trigger remains crisp. The receiver is finished in deep blue and embellished with the elegant FN Grade III engraving pattern, consisting of flowing stylized acanthus scrollwork arranged within elongated panels and decorative wedges extending across the receiver surfaces. The engraving is executed to the high standard expected of FN's premium-grade guns during the Belgian production era. A particularly striking feature is the gold-inlaid FN logo located at the rear of the receiver ahead of the stock wrist. The gun is further enhanced by a gold-plated trigger, adding another level of refinement consistent with its Grade III designation. The barrel itself carries the feature that truly distinguishes this model from standard production Auto-5s. The top rib is factory gold inlaid with the inscription: "SPECIAL POUR TIR AUX PIGEONS" Translated from French, this means "Special for Pigeon Shooting," clearly identifying the gun as a purpose-built competition model intended for the demanding European live pigeon circuit. The shotgun is stocked with beautifully figured exhibition-grade walnut, featuring a finger-groove forend and sharp point-pattern checkering throughout. The wood quality is substantially above standard production grades and complements the upgraded engraving package perfectly. An orange recoil pad completes the stock. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition. Factory-designated "Special Pour Tir Aux Pigeons" Auto-5s are seldom encountered and represent some of the most specialized and desirable Belgian Browning variants. Combining Grade III engraving, gold inlays, exhibition walnut, and documented pigeon-shooting provenance, this is an exceptionally attractive collector-grade FN Auto-5 that would be equally at home in a serious Browning collection or on display alongside the finest European sporting arms.
