Fine WWII Late War Underwood M1 .30 Carbine Model 1944
Just acquired along with a large collection of U.S. military firearms including a number of highly collectible and excellent conditioned M1 models is this very fine vintage WWII U.S. M1 .30 caliber carbine made by Underwood-Elliot Fisher of Hartford, CT.
This specimen serial number 4042238 was in a block of serial numbers manufactured from February, 1944-March, 1944. A model of 1944 it has a low wood stock with appropriate cartouche. It has a Type III barrel band with lug which is proper for this specimen. The barrel is marked Underwood 2-43 which is appropriate. The flip sight was replaced with adjustable sight consistent with end war production.It has a flat bolt which could be a transition late war as well. The mag release is a later clip release marked “M” .
The oiler is an oval cut and the handguard and earlier 2-rivet. The stock is appropriate as well made in the Hartford plant. An authentic stock it is cartouched with “GHD/UEF” which is Underwood Elliot Fisher which very appropriate to this specimen. The sling is 1944 which is also ok.
The carbine exhibits strong finish overall on metal-far superior to the majority of examples with a faded grey patina.
The wood is sound with all markings and has a few service bumps and bruises but overall this is a wonderful WWII original M1 one which shows late war production and transition to the Korean War.
Overall one of the cleanest Underwood carbine specimens which we have had the pleasure to offer.
