Combining hand-detachable sidelocks, exceptional engraving, refined mechanics, and extraordinary attention to detail, this elegant 20 bore represents the highest traditions of European bespoke gunmaking.
Manufactured in 1927, this exquisite sporting gun is chambered in 20 gauge with 2.75" chambers and fitted with 26.5" barrels choked Improved Modified (.020") and Full (.030"). Weighing a mere 5 pounds 7 ounces, it is a true lightweight game gun, built for fast handling and effortless carry afield. The lively balance and trim proportions are exactly what one expects from a premier upland gun intended for the most demanding sportsmen.
The gun is built on a highly sophisticated bolstered Holland & Holland-style hand-detachable sidelock action featuring double triggers with articulated front trigger, ejectors, gold-line cocking indicators, barrel side-clips, double underlugs, and a Doll's Head third fastener. This combination of locking features creates an exceptionally strong action while maintaining the elegance and refinement expected of a best-quality gun. The action remains smooth and locks up tight, the triggers are crisp, and the ejectors remain strong and perfectly timed.
Condition is described as fabulous overall, exhibiting only faint wear consistent with careful use over nearly a century. The bores are clear and the gun remains mechanically excellent throughout.
Visually, this shotgun is extraordinary. The case-colored action retains remarkable presence and serves as the backdrop for some of the finest engraving one is likely to encounter on a sporting gun. The receiver exhibits complete coverage vine, floral, and fine English scroll engraving, executed with exceptional precision and depth. The engraving extends across the action body, fences, lockplates, trigger guard, and surrounding metal surfaces, creating a seamless display of artistry.
The work is signed by M. Hannay, one of Lebeau-Courally's noted master engravers. Hannay is documented in Marco E. Nobili's authoritative reference Lebeau Courally, Gun and Rifle Makers Since 1865, further confirming the gun's importance and authenticity. The engraving becomes even more impressive upon close inspection, revealing deeply sculpted relief work, beautifully executed scroll backgrounds, and numerous refined details throughout the action.
Additional deluxe features include gold-washed internals, checkered triggers, and a beautifully sculpted and skeletonized top lever. The blued steel barrels have been professionally reblacked to a London standard and complement the case colors perfectly.
The trigger guard bears the inscription:
"Sigismondo Corte Armi Genova Fornitore Della Real Casa"
translated as:
"Sigismondo Arms Court, Genoa — Supplier to the Royal Household."
The walnut stock is every bit the equal of the metalwork. A beautifully figured straight-grip walnut stock and splinter forend display sharp, fine diamond-point checkering. The attention to detail continues with a grooved horn buttplate secured by nitre-blued screws individually engraved with floral motifs, a level of finishing rarely encountered even among best guns.
A gold initial oval adorns the belly of the stock, while the forend features an elaborate gold crown-over-shield inlay. The shield itself is engraved with a pigeon and accompanied by a ribbon bearing the inscription:
"THE LEBEAU SPORTING GUN"
