Several thousand are estimated to have been made. Ethan Allen was a contemporary who was also in the business of making firearms, especially pepperboxes, but with a different design. Blunt & Syms pepperboxes feature a ring trigger and a hammer on the bottom of the firearm instead of on top, making it a bit more streamlined. The hammer also has a small shield mounted on it to protect the user’s hand from the small detonation of the percussion cap. This early example of a double-action pistol must have been quite a selling point. As these were considered “point and shoot” short range defensive weapons or “belly guns”, the market did not seem to object to the limitation of not having sights. These revolvers enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s first designs. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history. The overall condition is fine. Much original blue finish remains on the barrels. Strong action. The bores are in good shape for their ages. Nicely engraved frame. Both grips are fine. An “R-C” is marked on the muzzle of the barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
