Description: Historic Remington Model 4-S .22 Rifle from Remington Arms Museum Offered here for sale and just acquired is an historic Remington Model 4-S acquired from a prestigious arms collection and documented as having been a part of the Remington Museum collection of firearms. This specimen was part of the esteemed John Amber Collection within the Remington Arms Museum and was de-accessioned from the collection when it was sold off in 1948. We have recently acquired and sold a number of arms from this same collection. The John T. Amber Collection at the Remington Arms Museum was a significant assembly of firearms and related artifacts, reflecting Amber's profound impact on the world of firearm collecting and literature. This rifle carries an inventory Tag number – a brass plate marked #944, corresponding to its museum catalog number. It was also listed in two of Remington’s inventories as “Boy Scout” model John Amber was the longtime editor of Gun Digest and a respected firearms historian and collector. This specimen was acquired decades ago into a private collection acquired at the sale of the John T. Amber collection of firearms in 1986 by Bourne Galleries. We will offer a documentation letter from Hansen & Hansen, our well-known firearms and appraisal firm, confirming its acquisition from the museum and collection lineage. A superb collectible which should occupy a lofty position in any firearms collection particularly those who specialize in Springfield trapdoor arms and Remington arms related collections. The Remington No. 4-S "Boy Scout" Rifle is one of the most interesting and collectible youth rifles ever produced by Remington. It was a militarized version of the company's famous No. 4 Rolling Block single-shot rifle and was marketed specifically to the early scouting movement in America. Today it is regarded as one of the rarest and most desirable Remington rimfire rifles. Historical Background In 1913, Remington-UMC introduced the No. 4-S as a special youth rifle intended for drill, marksmanship training, and military-style instruction. Contrary to popular belief, it was not adopted by the Boy Scouts of America. Instead, it became the official rifle of the rival American Boy Scout organization, which was founded by media magnate William Randolph Hearst. Remington initially sold the rifle directly to members of that organization for only $5, including a bayonet. Production lasted only about a year under the "Boy Scout" designation before Remington reintroduced essentially the same rifle as the "Military Model" in 1914. Total production is believed to have been no more than about 1,500 rifles, making surviving examples scarce today. Specifications and Dimensions The No. 4-S was built on the Remington rolling block action and chambered for .22 rimfire ammunition. Typical specifications included:
The finish was quite attractive for a youth rifle:
The significance of the Remington Museum brass tag is very important to historians and collectors alike-especially the Remington collector. The Remington museum maintained a reference collection of factory firearms, prototypes, presentation pieces, historical examples, and representative production specimens. Many guns in the collection were fitted with small numbered brass tags corresponding to museum inventory records. For this No. 4-S, the tag indicates its documented provenance to the Remington collection. Verification that Remington itself considered the rifle historically important and with published museum inventory records which we also have in our possession, this offers indisputable evidence and documentation of its museum history. There were a number of inventories made at the Remington Arms Museum during the years 1920, 1948, 1952 and 1980- the two most accurate being the 1948 and 1980 inventories which listed items by serial and tag numbers. This is documented in both of them. This specimen retains all of its original finish and save for a couple of storage marks is near 100% and UNFIRED. We will offer along with the purchase copies of the inventories denoting #944 as well as a letter from Hansen & Hansen noting that it was acquired from the estate of a Remington executive decades ago.
