Notable Design Highlights: Production Run: Originally introduced as the "Airweight Chiefs Special" in 1951, it was officially designated as the Model 37 in 1957. Production spanned until 2006. Frame Variations: Over its multi-decade run, it underwent several engineering updates (designated by -1, -2, -3 suffixes), which included changes to cylinder length and internal frame configurations. +P Rating: Older versions are strictly rated for standard pressure .38 Special ammunition. Later production models can generally handle .38 Special +P, but consulting the S&W manual or manufacturer guidance for the specific serial number is recommended. The Smith & Wesson Model 37 "Airweight" revolver is a five shot revolver that is identical to the Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chiefs' Special, save for the materials used in construction. Rather than steel the Model 37s' frame is made from lightweight aluminum, thus resulting in a considerably lighter firearm. (Note: It is very difficult to differentiate between the S&W Model 37 and the all Steel Model 36. They are visually identical. The only way to be sure a revolver is the Model 37 is if there is an extreme closeup of the words "Airweight" on the right side of the barrel, or it is described as such in the dialogue or text.) .38 Special
