Winchester Model 1894 rifle, caliber 38-55, standard 26" octagon barrel, full magazine, blued and case hardened finish, serial number 176981 indicates production 1903, with scarce carbine buttstock per the pictured and included Cody Museum email sheet - according to the Armax survey of the existing factory records, only 107 Model 1894 Rifles were shipped with a Carbine Buttstock, so this is a very rare piece! Walnut stocks, straight grip, sporting rear sight with thumb print elevator, German silver front sight.
CONDITION: Metal surfaces have a speckly/mottled appearance, not pitted, feel smooth. Receiver retains 20% original finish that has turned plum with some undertones of brighter blue at the back end, upper tang does not have any extra holes. Barrel retains 40% original fine aged blue/plum. Mag tube retains 65% original fine aged blue mixed with plum. Traces of case colors on hammer and lever. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, just light nicks and dings, still tight and proud. Action is crisp and smooth with a properly working half cock safety. Bore is good with scattered light black powder fouling, strong rifling still somewhat sharp, I'd say a 7.5 of 10. Has not been test-fired. Overall grades Very Good and is a very interesting special order Winchester 1894 in a great caliber that will continue to increase in value while bringing much joy at the range and in the woods.
