This revolver was conceived to be a serious workhorse for the military, police, and anyone who wanted a large double action revolver in a caliber such as .45 Colt. The US would go on to adopt versions that would be known as the Model 1909 and the Model 1917 for the Marines and the Army. Other chamberings that were available throughout the period of manufacture (1898-1946) were .38-40 WCF, .44 Russian, .44-40 WCF, .44 Special, .45 Long Colt, .455 Webley (Eley), and later .45 ACP, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, along with other less common calibers. They would see use in the Spanish American War, the World Wars, even in Vietnam. This example was originally chambered in .455 Eley and later converted to .45 Colt. This entailed reaming the chambers, but the original bore was left untouched and is fine for shooting lead, which is soft enough to make the slightly tighter bore work. A very popular conversion for these fantastic revolvers. The overall condition is very good. Armory refurbished with a Parkerized type finish. British broad arrow marked grips. The action is excellent and strong in both double and single action modes. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid. Numbers match on the frame and crane. British proofs throughout, and the barrel has been marked “.45 COLT” with part of the original chambering designation blotted out. A great piece from the Great War that evidently saw continued use afterward! Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 5-1/2 inches.
