History
The Browning Sweet Sixteen is a legendary, specially lightened version of the John Browning-designed Auto-5 (A5) semi-automatic shotgun. Known for handling like a 20-gauge while hitting like a 12-gauge, it has earned a reputation as the "gentleman's gauge" among upland bird hunters.

The Original Auto-5 Era (1937–1975)
  • Origins: Introduced in 1937, the Sweet Sixteen was designed to be roughly half a pound lighter than the standard 16-gauge Auto-5.
  • Weight Savings: Browning achieved the lighter weight by hollowing out the French walnut stock, and milling cuts into the receiver,.
  • The "Stealth" Years: While cataloged as a "Sweet Sixteen" starting in 1937, early models did not feature the famous receiver engraving. It wasn't until 1948 that the factory began officially engraving "Sweet Sixteen" and the likeness of John Browning onto the receiver.
  • Features: These classic models were highly recognizable by their squared "humpback" receiver, gold-plated trigger, and gold safety.
Production Shifts (1975–1990s)
  • Belgian to Japanese: Production of the classic A5 originally took place at Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium. In 1975, production was shifted to Miroku in Japan, where it continued on and off until the final Auto-5s rolled off the line in 1998.
