Description:
General Specs: Spandau, 1890, 8x57mm, 8lbs. 11oz. LOP 13 1/8"
Serial Number:  96 t

Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer this Gewehr 1888. The Gewehr 1888 was designed by the German Rifle commission (who designated it the Kommissionsgewehr) to keep pace with the French. The Gewehr 88 was the first German rifle to use the Patrone 88, the first smokeless cartridge issued by the German armed forces. The Gewehr 88 has seen use by many countries since its inception, including China, the Boer republics, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Poland, to name a few. Despite being replaced by the Gewehr 98 it still saw service in the German army by auxiliaries and paramilitaries through until the end of World War 2. This example, serial number 96 t, produced by Spandau in 1890, is in excellent overall condition. The 30” barrel retains 98% factory finish and has an excellent 7/10 bore. This rifle likely has been “re-arsenal-ed”, the serial numbers on the bolt and magazine do not match, however the serial numbers on the barrel and receiver do match. Furthermore, there are three different unit markings on the forend retainers, two of which have been crossed out, and there are visible proof marks on the stock. The non-defaced regiment mark reads Ldst.II.St.5.50. which stands for 5th Company of the 2nd Landsturm Infantry Battalion, Stuttgart, weapon number 50. Included with this 1888 is an “Ersatz” Bayonet, these bayonets are simplified wartime production pieces produced by smaller firms to meet demand during the start of WW1. Overall, a wonderful bolt action service rifle, and a perfect addition to any militaria collection. Have a look at the detailed specifications and pictures below. Thanks for looking!
