The Sears, Roebuck & Co. J.C. Higgins Model 50 is highly regarded as one of the finest "hardware store" rifles ever produced. Manufactured between 1951 and 1955, it was built through an impressive three-way collaboration: a pristine, commercial FN Mauser 98 action imported from Belgium, a premium chrome-lined barrel supplied by High Standard, and a stock marketed by Sears. Chambered in the versatile .30-06 Springfield cartridge, this 22-inch barrel bolt-action rifle remains a legendary "sleeper" choice for hunters seeking custom-grade Mauser quality at a working-class price. The combination of a stiff, solid-breech FN receiver and a high-grade High Standard 22-inch barrel makes the Model 50 exceptionally accurate. When shooting modern .30-06 Springfield hunting loads, it easily extracts the cartridge's full ballistic potential for North American big game, delivering tight groups out to several hundred yards. Because these were sold under a department store brand, they do not command the same collector premiums as a vintage Winchester Model 70.
