Developed to replace the expensive and labor-intensive P.08 Luger, the P.38 represented the next generation of German military handgun design. This example was produced by Spreewerk under the wartime manufacturer code “cvq” and served as part of the Wehrmacht’s standard sidearm inventory during the final years of World War II.
The P.38 introduced features that would influence military handgun development for decades, most notably its double-action/single-action trigger system and integrated decocking safety. Its short-recoil locked-breech design utilized a falling locking block that provided exceptional reliability while simplifying operation under combat conditions. The left side of the slide bears the desirable “cvq” factory code identifying manufacture by Spreewerk GmbH at Grottau, while the pistol retains the characteristic WaA88 military acceptance markings associated with Spreewerk wartime production. Serial number 1379u falls within a late-war production block and remains visible on both the frame and slide. The included magazine is additionally marked with the WaA88 acceptance stamp, providing another desirable wartime-correct feature sought by collectors.
