Description:
This is a very rare special order Winchester 1886, it is a fine example of the custom work that could be ordered from the factory at that time. This rifle has 9 special order features by my count, and is very likely the only one like it out of the approx. 160,000 model 1886's. It is an extra light, 33 caliber takedown, 24" barrel, with deluxe checkered wood - and with a rifle butt - A small rifle butt also, not the larger standard 1886 buttplate. Almost all extra light rifles are seen with a shotgun butt. There is the letter " K " engraved on the bottom of the receiver, listed on the factory letter. But perhaps the most significant factory special order is the matted barrel - I believe only 204 1886's were found to have this rare and elegant option. The Cody Museum letter states that the rifle was shipped in July of 1908, and was returned for repair in May of 1911. Madis stated in the Winchester Book that although not stated "Extra Light", the 33's were considered that by the factory. Madis also stated that after 1900, Deluxe rifles were harder to find, partly due to higher costs . Another unusual feature is seen under the upper tang - it is stamped '"refinished", I've only heard of one other 1886 with this factory refinished marking. The only indication of this however, is the slight polishing of the oval proof on the Receiver only - the barrel does Not appear to be be refinished, the proof mark and barrel lettering is sharp and crisp. The wood, I believe has had a light refinish, and there is a repaired crack at the toe of the butt. The wrist has a very tight hairline also, just noticeable on the left rear of the tang. Otherwise the wood is flush, or just proud to the metal, with some light marks and impressions. The checkering is very nice and the figured wood is beautiful. The action function is excellent, it feeds and ejects as it should. The bore is good , showing some light frosting, with strong distinct lands and grooves the whole way, and a nice throat , I rate the bore about a 7.5. Overall this is a really nice example of a Deluxe Winchester 1886. ***** This is a modern gun and must ship to a FFL, C&R okay. Check or certified funds preferred.
