Description:
Serial #15804, .44 WCF, 24 inch round barrel with a bright, excellent bore. This is a Winchester Model 1892 Takedown rifle manufactured in 1892. Takedown models are a scarce feature in the Model 92 that were formally patented and released to the public in 1893. The Cody museum factory letter which accompanies this example corresponds to a very early, first year production rifle that follows closely the history of the takedown with Serial number application on July 22, 1892, Warehouse receipt on October 18, 1893 and shipment as part of order # 19441 on August 22, 1894. Interestingly the takedown lever does not bear the patent date. It remains in very fine condition with barrel and magazine tube retaining about 65-70% blue that has turned a mottled plum-brown which shows under direct light and the frame shows about 65-70% bright blue with an even finish on the right side toning to plum-brown on the bottom and left side. The lever retains about 50-55% of the original slightly muted case-colors. The walnut stock and forearm are both solid with scattered old contusions and use marks. It is sighed with the original Lyman No. 6 folding leaf rear sight and an early No. 21 nickel silver sporting front sight. The action functions properly with a smooth lever, crisp hammer and trigger and very tight lock up. Included is a letter from the Cody Firearms Records Office. A rarely seen first year takedown model 1892 in very fine, all original condition. Antique
