Description:
The U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor rifle is a single-shot firearm chambered in .50-70 Government. It features a 32.5-inch barrel with fixed sights and the characteristic hinged breechblock “trapdoor” action developed for early metallic cartridge conversion rifles. The rifle has a gray patina finish consistent with age and a smooth, straight-grip wooden stock fitted with a factory metal buttplate. A full-length cleaning rod is mounted beneath the barrel. The lockplate is marked with an 1863 date, and the serial number is 21341.

This Springfield 1868 is used. The bore is described as good and shootable, and the action remains strong. The overall metal surfaces show uniform age toning, while the wood displays the typical handling and storage marks expected for a rifle of this period. The combination of the 1863-marked lock and 1868-pattern trapdoor conversion reflects the transitional design from percussion to centerfire cartridge systems following the Civil War era.

Included with the rifle is the original cleaning rod attached to the underside of the barrel. No additional accessories or packaging are noted. The firearm retains its fixed sight arrangement and original metal buttplate assembly. All markings, including serial number 21341 and the dated lockplate, are present and legible, providing clear identification of this antique Springfield conversion rifle.
