The AYA No. 2 is widely regarded as one of the finest values in the world of traditional sidelock shotguns. Built on the principles of the classic Holland & Holland Royal, the No. 2 combines hand-detachable sidelock construction, elegant game-gun handling, and proven field reliability at a fraction of the cost of an English Best gun. For decades, it has been the model against which all other Spanish sidelocks are judged.
Manufactured in 1970, this example is particularly appealing due to its provenance, having been originally ordered by Russel Hillsdon of Chichester, England, reinforcing its connection to the British sporting tradition that inspired the design. On the top of the left barrel is "SUPPLIED BY RUSSEL HILLSDON CHICHESTER" Built for the English market, it possesses the lively handling and practical dimensions expected of a proper game gun.
Chambered for 12 gauge with 2.75-inch chambers, the shotgun is fitted with 27-inch barrels choked Improved Cylinder (.007") and Modified (.015"). This is an exceptionally versatile field configuration, providing ideal pattern distribution for upland birds, walked-up game, and general sporting use. Weighing only 6 pounds 7 ounces, the gun is wonderfully responsive while retaining enough weight for a smooth and controlled swing.
The shotgun is built on a true hand-detachable Holland & Holland-style sidelock action featuring double triggers, automatic safety, ejectors, and gold-line cocking indicators. The hand-detachable locks are a hallmark of higher-grade gunmaking, allowing easy maintenance while showcasing the traditional craftsmanship that has made the No. 2 famous among double-gun enthusiasts worldwide.
Mechanically, the shotgun remains in very good overall condition. The bores are clear, the triggers are crisp, the ejectors are strong and properly timed, and the action remains smooth while locking up tightly. It presents as a well-cared-for game gun that has seen responsible use over its lifetime.
The case-colored action is adorned with classic Churchill-style scroll engraving, one of the most recognizable engraving patterns associated with the AYA No. 2. The remaining case colors provide beautiful contrast against the blued steel barrels and contribute significantly to the gun's traditional appearance.
The furniture consists of a well-proportioned straight-grip walnut stock and matching splinter forend, maintaining the classic game-gun profile favored by generations of British sportsmen. Sharp checkering remains throughout.
