slight bulge in the barrel of a .22 rifle can affect accuracy, but the extent depends on several factors:
  • Location of the bulge: A bulge near the muzzle typically has a greater effect on accuracy than one closer to the chamber because the bullet is guided by the bore all the way to the muzzle.
  • Size of the bulge: A very minor bulge may produce little noticeable change at short distances, while a larger bulge can significantly degrade accuracy.
  • Whether the rifling is distorted: If the bulge has altered the rifling, the bullet may not spin consistently, causing groups to open up.
  • Consistency: Sometimes a bulged barrel still shoots reasonably well but with larger groups; other times it can cause flyers and unpredictable point-of-impact shifts.
As a rough idea:
  • A healthy .22 rifle that groups 1 inch at 50 yards might open up to 2–4 inches or worse if the bulge is affecting bullet stability.
  • In some cases, especially with a very slight bulge and casual plinking distances, the difference may be hard to notice.
More importantly, a bulged barrel indicates that the barrel has been overstressed at some point (often from firing with an obstruction in the bore). While a small bulge doesn't always mean the rifle is immediately unsafe, it's worth having the barrel inspected by a qualified gunsmith before continued use.
