Description:
Serial #13543, .30-40 Krag, 29" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1894-dated rifle that has 85-90% original blue remaining on the barrel, with mottled gray fading at the muzzle, and scattered spots of mild freckling here and there along the balance. The receiver has about 25-30% of original blue remaining, with the balance turned to a mellow, dark gray patina. A similar amount of original blue remains on the magazine door, with mottled plum-brown freckling and a few very minor specks of pinprick pitting on the face. The bolt has a mostly bright gray patina along the body, with darker freckling mixing in on the shroud, cocking-piece, and handle. The extractor has turned to a mostly blue-brown patina with hints of bright fire blue around the edges. A correct Model 1892 rear sight is fitted. The walnut stock has a legible "JSA / 1894" cartouche, with small handling marks and surface blemishes scattered about the reapplied military oil finish. A single filled crack is present on the right side running back from the magazine door just above the trigger. The ramrod channel has been filled and the stock compartment is empty. The rifle is accompanied by an original 1898-dated Krag bayonet that measures 16 1/4" overall, with an 11 5/8" straight, single-edged blade having single stopped fullers and a 4 3/8" false edge at the tip. The blade is still armory bright, with some minor scabbard marks and dried oil in spots. The hilt fittings are mostly gray, but with some minor mottling throughout, as well as some spots of faint freckling as well. The wooden grip panels are in very good shape and the scabbard and swiveling belt hook are in fine shape with only some spots of minor plum-brown freckling scattered about. A period leather sling is also installed that has light crazing and flaking along the flex points, but is still fully serviceable. This is a handsome Springfield-made Krag that is in very good-fine condition overall. Antique;
