This French Model An XIII Heavy Cavalry Trooper's Sword (Cuirassier Sabre) was manufactured at the Imperial Arms Factory at Klingenthal in October 1813, one of the classic heavy cavalry weapons of Napoleon's Empire. The spine inscription "Mfture Imperiale du Klingenthal Octobre 1813" is exactly the abbreviated form commonly found on Napoleonic-era Klingenthal blades. The An XIII sword evolved from the earlier An IX and An XI heavy cavalry sabres. It was designed for France's elite heavy cavalry—primarily the Cuirassiers and Carabiniers—whose role was to deliver devastating shock charges against enemy formations. The weapon was nicknamed a "wrist breaker" because of its substantial weight and powerful cutting ability. By 1813, France was rebuilding its armies after the disastrous Russian campaign. Weapons produced in 1813 could have been issued for the German Campaign, including the battles around Leipzig, or for the 1814 defense of France as it was issued during one of the most dramatic periods of the Napoleonic Wars. What makes this special to collectors of the period is the strong readable inscription, sharp proof marks, no rust or pitting. It also has original brass hilt and scabbard present. Overall a specimen which should appeal to the collectors of French military especially those who collect weapons of the Napoleonic War period. Bottom of Form Thanks for your bid.
