This is a very handsome musket, built along British lines, that uses a US Model 1816 musket barrel marked "P / US / 1833" on the left side of the barrel breech, and "XVIII" on the underside. The barrel has retained about 70-75% of an old browned finish with some mottling present throughout, as well as some light-moderate pitting at the breech on the right side surrounding the added vent plate. The musket is equipped with a high quality unmarked modern flintlock that is equipped with both a swan-necked cock and roller bearing frizzen spring. The metal has nearly all of the original browned finish remaining, which closely matches the period browning on the barrel. The musket has a nicely proportioned, pin-fastened, full-length stock that has numerous minor handling marks and small surface blemishes throughout the old oil finish. There are two short with-the-grain cracks on the left side: one running back from the brass nosecap, and one running forward from the rear lock screw bolster. The right side has a thin wooden veneer added around the lockplate when the gun was reconverted to flint. The brass stock furniture has an overall dull yellow-ochre patina, with some faintly legible letters scratched into the wrist escutcheon: "M W B / C H N H" (possibly owner’s initials over a town or unit and New Hampshire state marking). The musket is accompanied by a modern brass-tipped steel ramrod, as well as an old, unmarked Enfield-style socket bayonet that has a 17" angular blade with hollow-ground back flutes. The metal has an overall dull brown patina, with a slight break at the base of the blade, and an added locking collar on the 3 1/4" long socket with L-shaped mortise. This is a handsome militia musket, and rates very good condition overall. Antique; Price: $995.00 Antique: Yes |
