Description:
ITALIAN Antique TORINO Model 1870/87/15 VETTERLI 6.5x52mm INFANTRY Rifle

Made in 1880 & Served as Late as WORLD WAR II

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Italian Vetterli Model 1870/87/15 Infantry Rifle, made in 1880 at the Torino Arsenal in Torino, Italy. As this rifle was made in 1880, it was originally manufactured in the Model 1887 magazine configuration. Like several other European countries in the late 19th Century, Italy hardly seemed able to keep up with the latest and greatest firearms technology in the fierce arms race led by France and Germany. This rifle itself underwent three significant changes, hence the three different Model dates of Model 1870, Model 1870/87, and Model 1870/87/15, in its very long service life.

The Model 1870 Vetterli was Italy's service rifle from 1870-1887. This single-shot bolt-action rifle was chambered for the 10.4mm Vetterli cartridge and was a simplified version of the Swiss M1869 Vetterli. In 1887, all M1870s were converted to the M1870/87 variant, adding a 4-round magazine to make them repeaters. During WWI, many were converted to 6.5mm caliber (M1870/87/15) using the “Salerno Method” of barrel lining to share ammunition with the Carcano service rifle. These converted rifles saw limited use away from front lines and were later deployed to Italian colonies as training rifles, seeing action again in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War primarily used by native African soldiers.

The overall condition is good. This example has been refinished. Excellent action. Bright bore with strong rifling. This example sports a solid stock in very good shape with light handling wear. A chip has been repaired on each side of the magazine well. The left stock cartouche is legible and dated “1917”. Markings are sharp. A small “G” is stamped on the stock in front of the trigger guard tang.
