WHAT’S INCLUDED: RIFLE

Few American sporting rifles generate the level of interest among advanced collectors that the Standard Arms Model M commands today. Manufactured by the short-lived Standard Arms Company of Wilmington, Delaware, the Model M was one of the most ambitious sporting rifle designs of the early twentieth century. Total production is believed to have been only about 12,000 rifles before the company disappeared into firearms history, making surviving examples dramatically scarcer than comparable Winchester, Savage, and Remington sporting rifles of the era. This particular rifle stands out even further as an exceptionally early low-serial-number example, bearing serial number 2164.

Chambered in the desirable .25-35 Winchester cartridge, this rifle reflects the golden age of North American hunting when flat-shooting medium-bore cartridges dominated deer camps across the country. The .25-35 earned a loyal following for its mild recoil, practical field accuracy, and effectiveness on deer-sized game. Combined with the smooth slide-action design, hunters could deliver fast follow-up shots while maintaining sight picture and control. More than a century later, the .25-35 remains one of the most respected classic sporting cartridges ever offered in an American hunting rifle.

What immediately separates this rifle from today's collector market is the extraordinary brass forearm assembly & butt plate. Richly detailed game-scene artwork featuring an elk and woodland landscape transforms this rifle from a scarce sporting arm into a genuine display piece. The brass forearm is complemented beautifully by highly figured walnut displaying striking grain patterns throughout the buttstock. Whether factory special order, period embellishment, or custom presentation work, the visual impact is undeniable and makes this one of the most distinctive Standard Arms rifles most collectors will ever encounter.

The Model M itself occupies a fascinating place in American firearms development. Designed during a period of rapid innovation, it represented Standard Arms' attempt to challenge the dominance of Winchester's lever-actions and Remington's slide-action sporting rifles. The takedown design offered practical portability for hunters traveling long distances, while the streamlined receiver and efficient slide operation showcased the company's forward-thinking engineering. Examples with strong markings, attractive wood, and desirable chamberings have become increasingly difficult to locate as collectors continue to recognize the historical significance of these rifles.

For the advanced collector of early American sporting arms, this rifle checks nearly every box: low serial number, desirable caliber, scarce production, pre-World War I manufacture, exceptional visual presentation, and a level of uniqueness rarely seen within the Standard Arms collecting community. It is not simply another vintage hunting rifle—it is a conversation piece, a display centerpiece, and a surviving artifact from one of America's most ambitious but short-lived firearms manufacturers. Opportunities to acquire a Model M of this quality and individuality are few and far between.
