Savage Revolving Firearms Company Navy Model 1861 percussion revolver chambered in .36 caliber with a 7-inch octagonal barrel and distinctive ring trigger / figure-eight cocking mechanism. The top strap is marked "SAVAGE R.F.A. CO. MIDDLETOWN, CONN" with patent dates of June 17, 1856; January 18, 1859; and May 15, 1860, consistent with early production circa 1861.
The Savage Navy Model 1861 represents one of the most mechanically sophisticated American martial revolvers of the Civil War era. Its unique ring-lever cocking system allowed the shooter to press the middle finger into the lower ring to draw back the figure-eight lever, which simultaneously rotated the cylinder and cocked the hammer for firing with the upper trigger — a proto-double-action arrangement far more advanced than contemporary Colt and Remington single-action designs.
The solid-frame construction and .36 caliber chambering met U.S. Navy specifications. The cylinder bears an anchor acceptance stamp, "P" proof, and "J.P.G." sub-inspector marks confirming documented U.S. Navy government acceptance. The formal U.S. Navy contract called for only 800 revolvers at $20.00 each, making Navy-marked examples a distinctly small subset of the approximately 20,000 total Savage 1861 revolvers produced.
This Savage grades Excellent for its age — one of the strongest condition assessments possible for a Civil War martial revolver over 160 years old. The metal surfaces carry a smooth, even patina with scattered oxidation and honest handling marks that speak to genuine age rather than damage or neglect. Top strap markings and patent dates are clearly and legibly stamped. The anchor acceptance stamp, "P" proof, and "J.P.G." sub-inspector marks on the cylinder are present and legible, confirming U.S. Navy acceptance provenance.
Original walnut grips are well-fitted with expected service wear. Please reference all photographs carefully for complete condition assessment of all markings, patina, and grip condition.
The action is mechanically solid with smooth and functional operation of the characteristic Savage double-trigger ring-lever system. The bore is smooth and clean. As with all antique percussion revolvers, a thorough inspection by a qualified gunsmith with period arms experience is strongly recommended before any consideration of firing.
A U.S. Navy-marked Savage Model 1861 with anchor stamp, J.P.G. sub-inspector mark, legible patent markings, original grips, and Excellent condition grade is one of the most desirable configurations in Civil War percussion revolver collecting. With only 800 Navy contract revolvers produced versus approximately 20,000 total manufactured, martially marked Navy examples are significantly scarcer than Army examples and command corresponding collector premiums.
The mechanical ingenuity of the Savage design, its documented naval service aboard Union warships, the legibility of the government acceptance marks, and the strong condition combine to make this an exceptional example of one of the most unique and historically compelling American martial revolvers ever produced.
Additional Information: Total U.S. government purchases of Savage 1861 revolvers across all contracts totaled 11,284 units for Union forces. The Navy contract revolvers served aboard Union warships, while other Savage revolvers were issued to the 1st and 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry, 5th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, and Missouri Enrolled Militia units.
