Description:
Antique French Military FELIX ESCOFFIER Percussion .69 ARTILLERY Carbine

Scarce FRENCH MILITARY RIFLE with BAYONET LUG

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique French Felix Escoffier Percussion Artillery Carbine made circa the mid to late-1850s in St. Etienne, France. From 1853 to 1874, Felix Escoffier was an entrepreneur of the French Military system. The entrepreneur was a private person who was in charge of managing a state arsenal from a financial point of view. He did not typically manufacture firearms but coordinated production with civilian armorers in the Saint-Étienne region, occasionally producing civilian-market rifles and revolvers under his own name.

The technical control was still a purely military thing, with the director being a Colonel or Lt. Colonel. The entrepreneur was investing his own money in a state arsenal for a certain time, usually for ten years. If he was able to keep the cost of the weapons low enough, he was making money. And if the arsenal was able to produce more firearms than needed by the French government, he had the right to sell firearms under his own name, the profit being in that case maximum for him.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The nipple is ground. Gray patina. The bore has darkened and remains good for its age. The stock shows average wear, a crack on the left flat (stable), and sanding marks on the toe. Chipping around the buttplate toe. Legible markings.
